Slowly, that time of the year is arriving when dressing in the morning isn’t a lot of fun. After looking out of the window (everything’s grey) and into the closet (nothing suitable to wear), you might want to go back to bed directly. On rainy Autumn and cold Winter days it’s just so much more difficult to be dressed prettyly and appropriately than it is in Summer. When the colorful leaves have fallen, you automatically feel less inspired and bored by your wardrobe. Luckily, you neither need to buy lots of new clothes nor do you have to wear jeans every day – I collected some tips to get through the cold season in style without spending much money.

Scrap books in which you stick inspiring snippets from magazines and catalogues are a nice idea, but at the moment I’m in love with mood boards: big pin boards filled with everything that inspires you lately. I love my 3 IKEA-cork boards that I covered with beautiful buttons and fabric scraps, pictures and doilies. Notes or sketches you make for instance while browsing through fashion mags can also be part of your mood board. Beautiful color combos, fabrics or cuts of garments you like – there’s room for all of those things on your inspiration wall. And when you don’t know what to wear in the morning or you want to make a list what to upgrade your wardrobe with, you can just take a look at it.

When I feel generally uncreative, I always find it helpful to take a look at originally dressd people – online, in books or in real life. My favourite blogs and street fashion websites that never fail to inspire me can be found here. Some great books are The Cheap Date Guide to Style by Kira Jolliffe and Bay Garnett, Street: The Nylon Book of Global Style and the New York Look Book by Amy Larocca and Jake Chessum. Old magazines and books found on eBay or flea markets can also be very inspiring. But actually, you can get ideas everywhere when you keep your eyes open: an interesting outfit spotted in a shop window, a great color combination you see on the weekly market or something great a friend is wearing.
